Panel Upgrades & Service Upgrades
200A service upgrades and safe panel replacements for older Monmouth County homes.
Older Monmouth County homes were often built with 100–150A service that today’s central AC, EV charging, induction cooking, and finished basements simply outgrow. When your panel trips under normal load, has no room for new circuits, or is an obsolete or recalled brand, an upgrade is usually the fix.
We handle the whole job: the load calculation, the permit, coordinating the utility disconnect and reconnect, the new panel or full service upgrade, and the final inspection.
Homeowners & businesses
For homeowners
In older homes it’s usually about capacity — a 100–150A service that can’t keep up with central AC, an EV charger, a hot tub, or a finished basement, or an obsolete/recalled panel that needs to go for safety.
For businesses
For businesses it’s about growth and code — added equipment load, a tenant fit-out, or correcting violations flagged at inspection. We size the service to your equipment and work around your hours.
Signs you should call
- Breakers trip when the AC, dryer, or microwave runs
- A fuse box, or an obsolete/recalled panel brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco)
- No open slots left to add a circuit
- Lights dim or flicker when big appliances kick on
- You’re adding central air, an EV charger, a hot tub, or finishing a basement
- The panel is warm, rusted, or buzzing — call us sooner rather than later
How it works
Call or request a quote and describe the problem or project. We’ll ask a few questions, and when we can we’ll give you a sense of what’s involved right away.
We come out and find the real issue — not just the symptom — and tell you what it’ll cost before we do it. A simple fix we’ll often just take care of on the spot; for a bigger job we provide a written estimate. Either way, no surprise charges.
We do the work to NJ code, pull the permit and handle the inspection where it’s required, and walk you through what we did before we leave.
How we price it
Every home is different, so we price a panel job on site rather than from a menu. What moves the number:
- Whether it’s a panel swap (same service size) or a full service upgrade to higher amperage
- The condition of the service entrance, meter, and grounding — what has to be brought up to code
- Whether the meter or panel has to be relocated
- Overhead vs. underground service
- Township permit and inspection fees (see your town page)
You get a written estimate after we see it — nothing added later without your say-so.
Panel upgrades — frequently asked questions
How do I know if my panel needs upgrading?
Common signs: breakers that trip under normal load, a panel with no room for new circuits, an obsolete or recalled brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or an old fuse box), lights that dim when the AC or dryer kicks on, or planning for an addition, EV charger, or central air. We run a load calculation and tell you straight whether a panel swap or a full service upgrade is the right call.
Will my power be off during a panel upgrade?
Yes, for part of the day — we coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect and work to keep the outage as short as we can. We walk you through the plan up front so you can prepare.
Will you give me a price before doing the work?
Yes — you’ll know the cost before we do the work. For a service call or a small fix we’ll tell you what it’ll take and, if it’s quick, often just take care of it on the spot. For a bigger job like a panel upgrade or an install, we provide a written estimate. Electrical pricing depends on what we find on site, so we price it after we see it rather than from a menu — and we don’t add to it without your say-so.
Do you handle small jobs, or only big projects?
Both. A single outlet, a flickering circuit, or one new fixture is just as welcome as a full panel upgrade or a rewire. We’d rather you call a licensed electrician for the small stuff than risk a fix behind the wall going wrong.
How quickly can you come out?
We offer same-day service for urgent electrical problems. Call (732) 555-0148 — depending on the day you might reach us directly and get a quote or a visit set up on the spot, or leave your details and we’ll get right back to you. We won’t promise a time we can’t keep.
Why call a licensed electrician instead of doing it myself?
Electrical work is one of the few home jobs where a mistake can start a fire or quietly fail an inspection years later at resale. A licensed, insured, and bonded electrician pulls the permit, does the work to current NJ code, and leaves you with an inspection sign-off — unpermitted or DIY work can void your insurance and create problems when you sell.
Is Northline Electric licensed and insured?
Yes — Northline Electric LLC is a licensed, insured, and bonded New Jersey electrical contractor (NJ Lic. 34EI01388240), and we provide a certificate of insurance on request.
